Juju Dhau

Juju dhau is a special variation of dhau made in Bhaktapur district. It is known for its rich taste and thick consistency. Dhau is a variety of yogurt prepared mainly by the Newar people of Nepal. It is traditionally made in clay pots. This is the specialty of Bhaktapur city. It is usually prepared with buffalo milk, which is more fatty than traditional cow’s milk. Juju Dhau literally translates to “King of Curd” in Nepali language. According to a story, the Mallakal kings of the valley once organized a curd competition. Yoghurt producers from Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur participated in the competition. The king liked Bhaktapur curd and from that day Bhaktapur curd was called Juju Dhau. Juju Dhau is an integral part of the cuisine of Bhaktapur district. It is highly sought after by domestic and foreign tourists.
