The Amazing Baya Birds

Perhaps you have seen birds making their nests. When the birds start collecting dry tuft or straw, you can imagine they will build a new home. Soon they will have young, lovely kids in them.

The nests of birds are not just homes. They are wonderful pieces of art.

Of all the birds, the weaver birds are excellent in making nests. Among them, the baya weavers are amazing.

Their nest is a long one, shaped like a bottle. When it is April or May and light rain starts falling, these birds start building their nests. Commonly, they select trees near to the rivers and canals for this purpose. Several birds build nest at a time, and this area looks like a village of the baya birds.

It is the male bird that builds the nest. When the nest is half ready, it gives a loud call. The female visits the nests and sees if it is okay. If she likes it, she chooses to stay there. At this, the male works quickly and completes the nest. After this, the female lays her eggs and hatches the young ones in the nest.  Usually, she lays two to four white eggs and starts sitting on them. After some time, beautiful nestlings come out of those eggs.

After the female starts warming the eggs, the male goes away. He builds yet another nest. Another female visits it. And another family takes shape. In one season, the male baya bird builds five to ten nests.

The female baya, who is a loving mother, lays eggs, warms them and raises her kids.  Those male birds, whose nests were not selected by any female, stop weaving nests. They just abandon their nests half-built.  Some other birds, and sometimes, file mice occupy those nests.

When the rainy season starts again another year, the male baya birds get back to working. Another baya village emerges. Again, we have a great sight to look at.
